The Jason Momoa and Amber Heard-starrer American superhero film Aquaman might be due for release in the US and India but in China, the film has set off fireworks at the box-office. The James Wan directorial is inching closer to the $100 million-mark, all thanks to its spectacular performance at the Chinese box-office.
According to Forbes, the film debuted in the Middle Kingdom last weekend and has already collected a whopping $94 million, almost $9.7 million of which came through IMAX screens alone. What’s truly astonishing is the fact that Aquaman has already surpassed the lifetime collection of the Gal Gadot-starrer Wonder Woman to become the highest-grossing DC movie ever in China.
If Box Office Mojo is to be believed, Wonder Woman had amassed around $90.4 million in the East Asian country. The next target of Aquaman could well be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, that had fetched $95 million in China in its lifetime.
Aquaman is the cinematic equivalent of bouillabaisse - a fish stew of a superhero movie into which every available ingredient has been thrown.Bits of it are hard to digest, bits are flaky, but it has plenty of flavour.It is rousing fare, made with enough conviction for it to get away with its moments of extreme kitsch silliness."
Aquaman has set a pre-sales record for Atom Tickets, topping Deadpool 2, Avengers: Infinity War,and Black Panther.Clearly, Aquaman has captured the attention of movie fans with its larger-than-life adventure that must be seen on the big screen,” Atom Tickets co-founder and chairman Matthew Bakal said.
Atom Tickets is the exclusive ticketing platform for Amazon Prime’s advance screening of Aquaman on Dec. 15, in addition to selling tickets for the wide release six days later amid expectations of a $65 million opening weekend in North America. Prime members can purchase up to 10 tickets through Atom Tickets for the showing at more than 1,000 Regal, AMC, ArcLight Cinemas, and National Amusements theaters.
