Tamil actor Ajith Kumar’s decade-old blockbuster Mankatha has made a thunderous return to theatres, drawing massive crowds during the Republic Day weekend. The re-release has now become the third highest-grossing re-release in Tamil cinema, reaffirming the film’s enduring popularity and cult status among fans.
Directed by Venkat Prabhu, the action thriller opened to a strong response, earning over ₹4 crore gross on its first day in India. Collections remained steady across the four-day extended weekend, with Tamil Nadu contributing the majority of the revenue. By the end of the holiday period, Mankatha had grossed approximately ₹11.75 crore in India, including nearly ₹11 crore from Tamil Nadu alone.
The film also performed well in overseas markets, adding around ₹1.25 crore, which took its worldwide re-release gross to an estimated ₹13 crore. Despite this impressive performance, Mankatha currently ranks third among the highest-grossing Tamil re-releases, behind Rajinikanth’s Padayappa, which earned over ₹18 crore, and Vijay’s Ghilli, which crossed ₹30 crore. Notably, Mankatha surpassed Ghilli in pre-sales collections.
Across the broader South Indian film industry, Mankatha stands fourth on the list of all-time highest-grossing re-releases. The top spot continues to be held by SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic, which has amassed over ₹50 crore worldwide through re-release screenings.
Originally released in August 2011, Mankatha was a major blockbuster, grossing more than ₹75 crore worldwide during its initial run. The film follows Vinayak Mahadev, a corrupt Mumbai ACP, who masterminds a high-stakes heist involving illegal cricket betting money with the help of four criminals.
