'Thangalaan' Advance Booking: Chiyaan’s Film Sets on Box Office Rampage Ahead of Its Release – Check Detailed Report

The much-anticipated film of Chiyaan Vikram, Thangalaan, is all set to hit cinemas in a few hours, and there is huge excitement among the fans of the actor in Tamil Nadu and other states.

The movie, directed by Pa Ranjith, and starring Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohan, and Hollywood actor Daniel Caltagirone in the lead, apart from Vikram, Thangalaan is an intriguing period action drama set in the Kolar Gold Mines (KGF) in the 19th century.

As of 12 AM on August 14, the film had amassed a respectable 4.89 crore in advance bookings, a figure that, while not earth-shattering, certainly lays a solid foundation for its opening day prospects.

With one day remaining, Thangalaan is projected to achieve significant pre-sales figures. Considering the pace and holidays, it’s expected to earn 18-22 crore net on day 1 at the Indian box office, surpassing Raayan’s 13.70 crores to become the second-biggest Kollywood opener of 2024, following Indian 2, which leads with 26 crores.

The trade is cautiously optimistic about Thangalaan’s prospects. While the film is expected to open well, its ability to sustain momentum over the weekend will depend on critical reception and word-of-mouth. Given the high stakes involved in a big-budget period drama, a positive opening is crucial for the film to recover its production and marketing costs.

According to entertainment industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, the advance bookings in Tamil Nadu are off to a great start, and the opening day collection in the state is likely to cross Rs 10 crore as it is a holiday owing to Independence Day.In the past three days, over 1,00,000 Thangalaan tickets have been booked.

The makers of the movie had said that Thangalaan captures the "actual history" of Kolar Gold Fields. “Over two centuries ago, the Kolar Gold Mine Field was discovered by the British, who exploited and looted it for their own purposes,” they had said. The movie is said to be based on true events around the lives of mine workers in KGF.While there are no major Tamil releases other than Thangalaan on Thursday, there are three Bollywood movies—Stree 2, Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein—set for release on the same day.
