Padmaavat collects Rs 114 crore in its opening weekend

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat faced resistance from its early stages due to a misinformation campaign and rumour-mongering. Despite these challenges, the film, which stars Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh has managed to overcome all odds; aided by the support of well-wishers from across the film fraternity, the government authorities and the society at large. Agreed, there were the members of Rajput Karni Sena in some states, who continued with the protests against the film. They blocked roads, threw stones at school bus with kids on board and torched vehicles. This why the Multiplex Association of India decided not to screen the movie in some states.

Despite that Padmaavat earned good amount of money at the domestic box office on the day of its release and over the first weekend. On Wednesday (January 24), which was the day of paid previews, the film raked in Rs 5 crore. On the first day, Padmaavat managed to earn Rs 19 crore. On the Republic Day, the film showed the obvious jump in the collections as it made Rs 32 crore. On Saturday and Sunday, Padmaavat managed to mint Rs 27 crore and Rs 31 crore respectively. The movie now stands at a total of Rs 114 crore at the domestic box office.

With this SLB gets his first highest opening weekend. His last film, Bajirao Mastani managed to collect Rs 46.78 crore during the opening weekend. And Ram Leela had collected Rs 52.5 crore in the opening weekend. Padmaavat’s first weekend collections are way higher than SLB’s last two directorial outings.

We can’t deny the fact that the controversy surrounding the film worked for it. It made people all the way more curious. And then there are people, who can’t stop raving about Ranveer’s brilliant portrayal of Allaudin Khilji. Have you watched Padmaavat yet? If yes, how did you like it?
